The college was established as the Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur in June 1960 and it was renamed in respect of Sir Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), well known as NIT Nagpur, previously Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), is an engineering institute in Nagpur.
 
History :
 
The first academic session at VRCE started in June 1960, with classes for the time being held at the Government Polytechnic, Nagpur. Later, the Maharashtra Government arranged 200 acres to the college for building its campus. The State College of Engineering, established in 1956 was combined with the VNIT.
 
College Grade / Ranking :
 
The institute has been ranked among the best thirty engineering colleges in India.
 
In 2002, the institute was made a National Institute of Technology under the NIT Act and renamed as VNIT.
 
In 2007 VNIT Nagpur was conferred the status of Institute of National Importance.
 
VNIT faculty and staff mentor the newly established National Institute of Technology Mizoram during the academic year 2010-2011.
 
Location :
 
The distance of the campus from Nagpur Railway Station is 8 km. and 7 km. from Nagpur Airport. The campus has retained and increased its green cover, rich in flora and fauna. All departments and laboratories are housed on the campus.
 
Admissions :
 
Undergraduate programs are offered in Architecture and the 12 different Engineering disciplines.
 
VNIT has total intake of 798 students for undergraduate programs & 350 students for Master’s programs each year.
 
The institute is going to start with Aeronautical Engineering.
 
The institute uses relative grading on a 10-point scale.

College Campus :
 
The institute is located near Ambazari Lake, about 8 kms from Nagpur Railway Station and 18 kms. from Nagpur Airport. There are three main entrances to the 220 acres campus, that is the Main Gate on South Ambazari Road, the Bajaj Nagar Gate and the Yashwant Nagar Gate.
 
The campus has amenities for auditoriums, a computer center, sporting facilities, a State Bank of India branch, a Canara Bank branch, cafes, coffee shops, a co-operative store and a post office.
 
Most students live on the campus, which has over 12 men's hostels and 2 women's hostels. The campus is fully networked using fiber optic cables. A gymnasium and various sports facilities are available on the campus.
 
Festivals / College Events :
 
The student clubs host a number of annual fests or events, inviting participants from similar clubs across the region or the nation, including :
 
1) AXIS : Anational-level technical festival usually organized at the end of September.
 
AXIS made its modest opening under the name ODYSSEY that was launched, on a national level in the year 1999 - 2000. ODYSSEY included events like On the Spot Designing Contest, Management Workshops, software and hardware development events, ethical hacking, events addressing industry related problems and most notably Udyog.
 
2) Aarohi : Annual youth festival (Cultfest) organized every year during winter in February.
Aarohi attracts more than 2000 participants in elimination rounds of a range of contests. This festival is a huge hit with more than 3000 spectators every year.
 
3) Consortium: An entrepreneurship and business management event by the students and E-CELL of VNIT Nagpur. It is an annual show which takes place in mid January every year. Initiated in 2010 by a group of seven passionate students, it attracts a crowd of 4000 Students.
