The Regional Engineering College, Warangal (RECW), established in 1959 was the first among all the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges set up in India. The institute started offering courses in Mechanical, Civil & Electrical Engineering.
History :
The first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehruinaugurated Regional Engineering College, Warangal.
Regional Engineering College, Warangal was affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University until 1976. Since then it was affiliated to Kakatiya University until 2002.
The institute was given a deemed university status & renamed as the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in September, 2002.
NITW was awarded the status of Institute of National Importance on 15 August 2007.
In November 2012, NIT Warangal became an associate institute of the HERITAGE Program.

NIT Warangal has been frequently ranked amongst top engineering colleges in India.
NITW was ranked 15 by the India Today Best Engineering colleges 2012.
It was ranked 16 by Outlook India Top Engineering Colleges of 2012.
Dataquest India's Top Engineering Colleges 2011 ranked it 15th.
In rankings limited to government colleges it was ranked 15 by Mint Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.

Today NIT Warangal is an Institute of National Importance offering undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programs in engineering, technology, humanities, basic sciences and management.
The institute has 10 departments with about 200 faculty members and more than 2,400 enrolled students. As of 2012, the annual intake for the B.Tech. program was 425, with a student-faculty ratio of 10:1. The institute has 15% seats reserved for NRI Quota.

Every engineering branch at NITW has their technical organization with a staff head and executive body of students. They organize lectures, run quizzes and conduct workshops.

College Campus :
The campus is spread across 256 acres of land on Warangal Road. It is divided by the NH 202 highway into staff quarters, CCE and the main campus.
The main campus consists of Administrative Building, Academic Buildings, The Library, Students Hostels, Sports Pavilion and Gallery, Canteen, Seminar Hall, Director's Bungalow, and Guest House.
It has four residential blocks including one mega hostel for boys and one hostel for girls with internet and WiFi connectivity.

Library :
The Central Library has 1,58,000 books, technical pamphlets, standards, CD-ROMS, video cassettes and receives 2000 on-line journals through INDEST set-up by MHRD, government of India.
Festivals / College Events :
1) SpringSpree - It was established in 1978 & it is a three-day long annual cultural carnival held generally in the month of March. It is completely managed by students and includes cultural performances.
2) Technozion - Technozion is a three day extended annual technical symposium organized by the student fraternity of National Institute of Technology, Warangal.
Started in 2006, it has grown to become one of the main technical events of South India with participants of over 6000 students. Technozion is a collection of events, initiatives, workshops, guest lectures and exhibitions.
3) Zero Gravity - is held every year which is an inter branch competition in cultural events.
4) Cura - A National Level Management Meet conducted by the MBA students.

Top recruiters till mid-September 2012 for the current session have been Microsoft, Epic Systems, EA Sports, Amazon.com, Google, PepsiCo, DE Shaw, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, Oracle Corporation etc.
