The National Institute of Technology Raipur (NIT Raipur) was Founded in 1956 as Govt. College of Mining & Metallurgy with two engineering disciplines, mining and metallurgy.
The institute offers 2 undergraduate programs B.Tech. and B.Arch.and 2 post graduate programs M.Tech. and M.C.A.
History :
The first President of India, Rajendra Prasad laid the foundation stone of the college building on 14 September 1956. The college was inaugurated on 14 March 1963 by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Effective from 1958-59 the college was known as Government College of Engineering and Technology.
College Grade / Ranking :
On 1 December 2005, it was declared a National Institute of Technology (NIT) by MHRD.
NIT Raipurwas declared as the Institute of National Importance with the passing of the NIT Actin May 2007.
The institute celebrated its golden jubilee during December 2005.
Location :
The Institute, located in Raipur, the Capital City of Chhattisgarh State, is located 5 km away from Raipur railway station and 14 km from airport on NH-6, the Great Eastern Road.
Raipur city is well connected with all metro cities by frequent trains and is on the main Howrah-Mumbai railway line route.
Admissions :
The undergraduate admissions are based on the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) organized by CBSE, India.
The postgraduate admissions are based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
The postgraduate admissions for Master in Computer Application are done on the basis of NIMCET.

College Campus :
The Institute, located in Raipur, the Capital City of Chhattisgarh State, is spread over an area of 100 acres, is one of the biggest campus amongst all the technical institutions of Chhattisgarh. The campus consists of the main institute building, six hostel blocks, residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, a bank, a ready dispensary and a well maintained guest house.
The campus is so huge to accommodate a local railway station inside the campus. The institute has 35 lecture halls, 13 drawing halls & 85 labs.

Festivals / College Events :
Eclectika - is the annual techno-cultural fest of NIT Raipur. Eclectika'09 was well received with as many as 60 events and students from various colleges across India participating. The recently concluded Eclectika'10 & Eclectika'11 included numerous events and also musical performances.
