National Institute of Technology, Rourkela once Regional Engineering College Rourkela (REC Rourkela), is a publicly funded institute of higher learning for engineering and technology. The institute was established on the Independence Day in 1961.
History :
Former Chief Minister of Orissa, Biju Patnaikand inaugurated NIT Rourkela & its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Ministry of Human Resource Development awarded autonomy and functional independence to NIT Rourkela in 2002 thus making it one of the National Institutes of Technology.
The Rourkela city is very famous as a Steel City where India’s first public sector steel plant was set up.
College Grade / Ranking :
NIT Rourkela was ranked 19 in Outlook India's Top Engineering Colleges of 2012.
NITRKLwas ranked 8th in the Dataquest Top Engineering Colleges in India of 2011.
In rankings limited to government colleges, it was ranked 26 in the Mint Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.
Location :
The Rourkela railway stationlocated in the Howrah-Mumbai and Ranchi-Bhubaneswar main railway routes, is well linked to all parts of the country by road and rail.
The institute is at a distance of about 7 km from the Rourkela railway station.
The closest domestic airport to Rourkela is Ranchi ( Residence of M.S. Dhoni ) at a distance of 172 kilometers. Rourkela is one of the few cities who have a private airport maintained by SAIL.

College Campus :
The campus of the institute is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1.
The Campus is spread over an area of 462 hectares of land. NIT Rourkelais the largest engineering campus in the country after IIT Kharagpur.
The campus of the institute consists of the institute buildings, halls of residence, the Central library and staff colony. The main building is surrounded by all the departments, the lecture gallery, the workshops, the canteen and the audio-visual hall.
There are multiple courts near the hostels for playing lawn tennis, basketball and volleyball. A swimming pool and a stadium for playing cricket have been constructed.
The campus has all the facilities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community. The residential campus is equipped with a stadium.

NIT Rourkela has a very lively campus life with as many as 40 clubs or student organizations. These clubs spans a range of activities such as Technical, Cultural, Literary, Debating, Quizzing, Sports, Social Service, etc.
1) Innovision: The Technical festival of NIT Rourkela which was known as Confluence.
2) Nitrutsav: The Cultural festival where students from all parts of the country participate. The liveliest and happening event of the institute.
3) Vahaan: SAE, NIT-Rourkela chapter organizes a national level technical seminar.
4) Vrittanta: E-CELL, NIT Rourkela, organizes entrepreneurship conference in which many students from different national level institutes participates.
