U. Srinivas Mallyaand V. S. Kudvaestablished Regional Engineering College in Karnataka on 6 August 1960. Karnataka Regional Engineering College was renamed as National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, Karnataka.
 
History :
 
Karnataka Regional Engineering College, in earlier times was affiliated to the University of Mysore.
 
NITK celebrated its Golden Jubilee day on August 6, 2009.
 
KREC began with three primitive courses of engineering i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineeringand Civil Engineering. In 1965 the institute started with undergraduate courses in Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.
 
1966 onwards the institute started offering post-graduate courses.

NITK is located on National Highway 66 near Dakshina Kannada District. NITK is just 2km from Surathkal station & it is 22kms away from Mangalore Railway Station.
 
It is close to Mangalore International Airport.
 
From Mangalore Railway Station, all Express buses to Udupi, Manipal and Karkala regularly ply  to College’s Express Bus Stop.

NITK Surathkal offers undergraduate, post-graduate and Doctoral programs in Engineering, Technology, Science and Management. The institute has 14 departments and 11 support centers with about 200 faculty members, 4,800 students and 15,500 alumni worldwide.The institute has 4% seats reserved for NRI Quota. The annual intake for the B.Tech. Program is 450, with a student-faculty ratio of 1-77.

College Campus :
 
The 295 acres campus is situated on NH 66 by the coast of Arabian Sea, and has a private beach, including a lighthouse. All the students, Staff members & faculty members reside in the campus. Staff Quarters consist of the Director's bungalow, quarters for professors, lecturers & wardens.
 
The campus includes two Cooperative Societies and a shopping center, State Bank of India and Canara bank with ATM facility, staff club, gymnasium, Cafeteria, post office, hospital, guest house, Food Court, and playgrounds.

Festivals / College Events :
 
1) Engineer - is the three day technical conference of NITK Surathkal. The tag-line, of Engineer is 'Think.. Create.. Engineer..'. The event is very popular and is hugely sponsored by corporate companies.
 
2) Incident - The cultural festival which was started in 1980 is generally held for five days. The festival is planned, organized and managed by the students' activity clubs.
The festival includes events from dance and dramatics to music, painting, fashion and quizzing & Incident Pro-Nite.
 
3) Crescendo - Reading Room Committee organizes one of the biggest intra-college event ‘Crescendo’, Crescendo has been an annual tradition for last three decades.
