Year of Establishment :
It was established in 1961 and was recognized as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC) until 2002. The Government of India, granted NIT status to REC Calicut in June 2002 granting it academic and administrative autonomy.
History :
The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC), previously the Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), is a centrally funded technical university and an institute of national importance. NITC was set up in 1961 as Regional Engineering College, Calicut (CREC) as the ninth of its kind. The institute was affiliated to Kerala University until 1963.
In the beginning, the lectures were held at the Government Polytechnic at West Hill, Calicut before it shifted to its present campus. The college inaugurated with a yearly intake of 125 students for the undergraduate courses, on a huge campus of 120 acres.
College Grade / Ranking :
NITC was ranked 18 by the Mint Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.
NITC was ranked 13 by the India Today Best Engineering colleges 2012.
The college is among the very few institutions in the country to host a Supercomputer of its own.

The campus is situated 22 km north-east of Kozhikode (Calicut) city on the Calicut – Mukkam Road.
By Air :
You can reach NIT Calicut by taxi from the Calicut Airport and the Taxi fare is approximately Rs. 650/-
From Kozhikode (Calicut) Railway Station :
You can go to the Palayam Private Bus stand (around 200 meters from railway station) and board a private bus to NITC. Some of the buses /locals/drivers may refer to NITC as REC. The destination bus stop is popularly known as NIT Canteen stop. The bus fare is Rs. 12. Normally the bus may take 40 minutes to reach NIT Calicut. There are two routes to NIT. Board buses that reach NITC via Kunnamangalam.
The taxi fare to NIT Calicut from Kozhikode railway station is around Rs. 400/-
Auto fare to NITC from Railway Station is around Rs. 250/-
Admissions :
NITC offers Undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) in a variety of engineering fields.
Students are admitted for the undergraduate courses through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by CBSE, New Delhi. It has 3% reservations seats for NRI students.

College Campus :
NITC has a gymnasium, swimming pool, an open air theatre, an auditorium and facilities for outdoor sports like tennis, cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, roller skating, hockey and basketball. It also has a cricket ground where Ranji Trophy matches have been played.
NIT Calicut's supercomputer, Purna (Parallel Universal Remote Numerical Analyser), is available from anyplace in the campus and is provided for the use of all students and faculty members. PURNA has a maximum speed of 1.5 Tera Flops.
NITC is a fully residential institution with 13 hostels on the campus to accommodate students. There are around 2200 students in NITC hostels, hostels are inter-connected to the Campus Networking Center. A mini-canteen is available in the hostel premises.

NITC's Central Library, with more than 100,000 books, is one of the largest technical libraries in India. It subscribes to more than 200 print journals. The institute has a digital library, Nalanda which houses online resources.
Festivals / College Events :
NIT Calicut holds two major annual events, the techno-management festival Tathva, held in the monsoon semester and the cultural festival Ragam, which is held in the winter semester.
1) Tathva :
It was incepted in 2001. Tathva is the annual techno-management festival of NIT Calicut. It is regularly held during the month of September and lasts for four days. Tathva is regarded as one among the biggest technical festivals of South India.
2) Ragam :
Ragam is the cultural festival of NITC. Ragam is held in the memory of ex - student P. Rajan who died after being held in police custody.
Colleges and universities from all over the Kerala State and outside participate in events like trivia quizzes, dance competitions, rock shows and music concerts. Some of the performers who have performed in previous years include Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kamal Hassan, Blaaze, Shankar Mahadevan, Kartik, Benny Dayal, Stephen Devassy and Parikrama.
