Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology was founded in June 1961 as a joint enterprise between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. In 2003 REC Surat was renamed as Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology.
 
History :
 
NIT Surat was established to train scientists and engineers to cater to the country's growing need for Research & Development and technical manpower.
 
It is named after India's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
 
It shares its organizational structure and undergraduate admission process with sister NITs. The students and alumni ( ex-students ) of NIT Surat are casually referred to as SVNITians.
 
In 2002, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development upgraded Regional College of Engineering and Technology, Surat to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology.
 
In 2003 the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC& AICTE.
 
College Grade / Ranking :
 
NIT Surat has been ranked among the best engineering institutes of India by education surveys such as India Today, Outlook, DNA, Webometrics, Competition Success Review, etc.
 
In 2010, India Today ranked SVNIT, Surat as 22nd best engineering college among top 25 engineering colleges in India.
 
In 2011, according to India Today survey SVNIT, Surat was 18th best engineering college among the top 25 engineering colleges in the country.
 
In 2011, according to CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey SVNIT, Surat was at 10th rank among the top 15 engineering colleges of super excellence.
 
Location :
 
SVNIT is located on Athwa-Dumas Road, Surat. The campus is opposite to the Ichchhanath Temple. The campus is spread over 265 acres of lush green forest. The institute is midway between the Surat Domestic Airport and Surat Railway station.
 
The campus is around 10 km away from the Surat Railway station and is well connected by city buses and local trains. Regular city buses ply between Surat Railway station & NIT Surat.
 
Admissions :
 
NIT Surat offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Doctoral courses in Engineering and Technology, Science, Humanities and Management.
 
The institute has 9 academic departments with about 210 faculty members and around 3500 enrolled students. The annual intake for the B.Tech. Program is 496, with a student-faculty ratio of 1-15.

College Campus :
 
The campus is spread over 265 acres of flourishing green forest.
 
The main building houses the majority of the administrative offices of the institute.
 
The institute campus has three guest houses, a dispensary, a post-office, two nationalized banks and three ATMs, a telephone exchange and five cafeterias within its limits.
 
The majority of the institute's athletic and sports facilities are located in and around the Student Activity Center (SAC). The SAC maintains badminton courts, gymnasium, two basketball courts, a cricket ground and football ground.
 
Wi-Fi facility is available throughout the campus which is connected via hi speed Gigabit LAN.

Library :
 
The Central Library is situated near the admin building of the institute. It has a collection of 150,000 books and documents and it subscribes over 500 printed and online journals and symposium proceedings. The library has four halls for the convenience of the students.
 
Festivals / College Events :
 
1) MindBendis - SVNIT's annual technical festival, the largest of its kind in Gujarat. There are competitions, robotics events, guest lectures, workshops and quizzes.
 
2) Sparsh - is SVNIT's five-day long annual cultural festival, it is generally held in March.
 
It consists of literary and debating events and cultural party shows. The 'Sparsh Nites' are the Singing Nite, Dance and Skit Nite, Fashion Nite, Fun-n-Fair and the Celebrity Nite.
 
3) Autumnfest - is SVNIT's annual Automotive-Entrepreneurial festival. In 2007 events included The Apprentice, Business baazigar, Spark the B-plan event, Strategem, and Lock stock and trade.
 
4) MMNCT - Manoj Memorial Night Cricket Tournament organized by the students of SVNIT started in 2006 in remembrance of a fellow student.
