The Regional Engineering College at Tiruchirappalli was set up in 1964 as a joint venture between the Government of Tamilnadu & the Government of India. In 2003, the institution was renamed National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.
 
History :
 
In 2002, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development upgraded Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli to National Institute of Technology. Hence it became an institute of National Importance. Following this, in 2003 NITT was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC& AICTE. In sync with this the college was given autonomy in financial and administrative matters.
 
The institute is now undergoing accelerated growth through the World Bank-funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program.
 
Research grants to the institute from major government agencies exceeded one crore Indian rupees.

NIT Tiruchirappalliis frequently ranked as one of the top most NITs.
 
NIT Trichy was ranked 9th on the India Today Best Engineering Colleges 2012.
 
It was ranked 10th on the review conducted by Outlook India Top Engineering Colleges of 2012.
 
According to the Dataquest Top Engineering Colleges 2011 it was ranked 17th.
 
Among government colleges, it was ranking 12 in the Mint Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.
 
The Department of Architecture of NITT was ranked 9th in the Outlook India Top 10 Architecture Colleges of 2011.
 
All the faculty members hold PhD Degree.

NITT is located on NH 67 near to Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli.
 
Admissions :
 
NITT offers undergraduate and post graduate and doctoral programs in disciplines spanning engineering, science, architecture, technology and management. The institute has 16 departments with about 250 faculty members and more than 4,000 enrolled students.
 
As of 2012, the annual intake for the B.Tech. program was 630, with a student-faculty ratio of 14:1. The Department of Architecture of NITT is very highly rated and students need high score for getting an admission to this course.

Student Societies @ NIT Tiruchirappalli :
 
NITT has over 35 student groups across a variety of interests, including cultural, social, technical and professional groups, student publications and recreational groups.
 
Undergraduate students take part in at least one of the three national programs in their first year: the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the National Sports Organization (NSO) or the National Service Scheme (NSS).
 
College Campus :
 
The NITT campus is situated near Thuvakudi, on the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli. The campus extends over a huge 800 acres.
 
The main entrance is located on the southern end of the campus, facing National Highway 67.
 
The administrative building houses the administrative offices, the offices of the director and deans.
 
Other facilities on campus include a guest house, a modern hospital and pharmacy, a post office, a bank, 3 ATMs, Cafeterias, staff club, gymnasium, Food Court, swimming pool, playgrounds and two supermarkets.

Festivals / College Events :
 
1) Festember : The annual cultural festival of NITT organized by the students every year in month of September since 1975. The three day extravaganza includes music, dance and literary competitions.
 
2) NITTFEST : The intra-college edition of Festember, with the competition between various departments of the institute & different branches of engineering.
 
3) Pragyan : In the month of February, the annual science and technology festival of the institute is organized. The event includes contests in programming, management, robotics and other fields of engineering.
