The Regional Engineering College, Srinagar was established in 1960 and it was affiliated to the University of Kashmir. The institute was upgradedin 2003 & renamed as National Institute of Technology, Srinagar ( NIT-SRI ).
History :
It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established by the Government of India during the first Five Year Plan. NIT Srinagarbecame an Institute of National Importance on the Independence Day of 2007.
It is known as one of the top institute of the country for pursuing technical studies. The institute has produced more than 8000 engineering graduates till date from its inception.
National Institute of Technology Srinagar has signed Memorandum of Understandings with NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur and NIT Silchar for imparting superior education.
College Grade / Ranking :
NIT Srinagaris one of the oldest NIT in the family of NIT.
It is designated as the 'Best Engineering College of Jammu & Kashmir' with 1st Rank.
It is also recognized as the best engineering college in the northern region of India.
According to Outlook's India’s survey The National Institute of Technology Srinagar ranked 61 all over the India.
NIT Srinagar was ranked 45th on College Khabar ranking under the category of ‘Best Engineering College of India in 2012‘.

NIT Srinagaris located in the heart of the Kashmir valley at an altitude of 1,730 m above sea level. The institute is located on the western bank of the famous Dal Lake near the Hazratbal Shrine in the eastern region of the Srinagar city.
National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is located in the Kashmir valley which is at the north of the country. Surrounded by the pretty Himalayan ranges, the institute is situated at the banks of the famous Dal Lake.
The campus is about 15 kms from the Airport which is easily accessible by frequently plying transport like the SUVs and autos.
Admissions :
NIT Srinagar offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, social science and humanities. The institute has 13 departments with about 92 faculty members and around 2200 enrolled students. The annual intake for the B.Tech. program is 484, with a student-faculty ratio of 1-21.

College Campus :
The college campus is located in the heart of the Kashmir valley near to the famous Dal lake.
The facilities within the campus include a Central Library, a Computer Services Centre, free WiFi service at each hostels and a shopping complex. There is a Common-hall, which provides facilities for indoor games along with a fully equipped gymnasium.
The Institute provides boarding facilities to all the students and the faculty members, on the campus.
The Institute has a Maintenance Engineering Centre set up under the Indo-Italian partnership.

Techvaganza : NIT Srinagarorganizes annual three day science and technology fairusually held in month of April. The event exhibits a display of the latest technology.
The festival is organized, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of the Institute, with sponsorships from reputed companies.
Campus Placements :
The National Institute of Technology Srinagar has an excellent placement since its founding. During 2011-12 session it had 100% placement in CSE, IT, ECE, Mechanical, 95% in Electrical, 85% in Metallurgical and Materials and 40% in Civil and Chemical engineering.
It is recognised as a best NIT for Metallurgical & Materials engineering in the field of placement, and During 2011-12 session its highest package was 12-15 lakh per annum. Its average package is 4.5 to 5 lakh per annum.
