The Government of India and the Government of Assam jointly established the Regional Engineering College at Silchar in 1967. In 2002, the institution was renamed National Institute of Technology, Silchar.
 
History :
 
NIT Silchar was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College. In 2002 it was upgraded to the status of National Institute of Technology and was declared as Institute of National Importance.
 
The college was granted with autonomy in academic, financial and administrative matters. In 2002, the institution was raised to Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE.
 
Its campus is spread over 540 acres of land on the outskirts of the Silchar city.
 
College Grade / Ranking :
 
In 2007, the Indian government declared NIT Silchar as Institute of National Importance at par with the Indian Institutes of Technology ( IIT ).
 
Location :
 
Silchar is situated at a height of 115 meters above sea level on the banks of River Barak. It can be reached by air from Kolkata or from Guwahati and by road or train from Guwahati.
 
The institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road on the outskirts of the Silchar city.
 
Road Distance or driving distance from Silchar Railway Station to NIT - Silchar is 10 kms.
 
Admissions  :
 
The students who have passed their qualifying examination from the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Mizoram have been selected according to their AIEEE score conducted by the CBSE. This institute acts as a Counseling Centre for the entire Northeastern region including the state of Sikkim.
 
NIT Silchar offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, science and humanities. The institute has 11 departments with about 200 faculty members and around 2000 enrolled students. The annual intake for the B.Tech. program is 500, with a student-faculty ratio of 10.

The institute has a co-operative market located in the center of the campus which caters to all kinds of student requirements. The institute has a SBI Bank branch & a post office inside the campus for the convenience of the students.
 
The institute has a 100 kW solar power plant for its day to day functioning.

Library :
 
The Central Library has 60,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs and video tapes.
 
The library has been automated with Libsys software and it has become the first in the entire northeast region of India to apply RFID and DVR technology.
 
The library became digital library and has implemented the e-learning solution & Virtual Classroom in the institute.
