The institution was established in 1987 as Punjab Regional Engineering College ( PREC ) and, on 17 October 2002, was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University).
 
History :
 
The Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, popularly known as NIT-Jalandhar (NITJ), is one of the youngest of the 20 National Institutes of Technology of India. It was commenced as an organization between the Government of India and the Government of Punjab.
 
The college has total intake of 3500 students. 3000 students pursuing undergraduate B. Tech Program, 300 students pursuing post-graduate M. Tech / M. Sc Program and approx. 70 students pursuing for P. hd Program.

The institute is spread over 160 acres on the Amritsar G.T. Road Bye Pass.
 
By Air :
 
There are nearby two airports, Amritsar (80 Km) and Chandigarh (170 Km). It takes about one and a half hour to take a trip by road from Amritsar airport to Jalandhar and about three hours to move by road from Chandigarh airport to Jalandhar.
 
By Train :
 
Jalandhar is linked with all the main cities in India by train and road. Besides other trains, daily two Shatabdi trains run between New Delhi and Jalandhar.
 
The NIT Jalandhar is situated on G T Road (National Highway No 1). It is at a distance of 10 km from Jalandhar Railway Station and 12 km from Jalandhar Bus Stand. Auto fare charges are about Rs. 100.
 
NITJ can be approached by boarding a local bus bound for Kartarpur from Jalandhar Bus-Stand and getting down at Bidhipur Railway Crossing from where it is just a half Km away. 
 
Admissions :
 
The institute offers B.Tech. programs in nine disciplines of engineering and technology along with research programs leading to M.Sc, M.Tech and PhD.
 
The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from Punjab and the rest from other states / union territories of the country. The institute has total intake for 800 students.

Student Societies @ NIT Jalandhar :
 
The ASME Student Section is an institute chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
 
The other notable students societies are The Music and Dramatics Society (MADS), The Literary and Debating Society (LADS), The Movie Club & Eco Club.
 
College Campus :
 
The Institute campus is spacious and it is spread over an area of 154 acres. It has clean and wide roads surrounded by a green belt.
 
The campus area has been largely divided into special well-designed zones :
 
  • institution zone for teaching departments/centers/administration
  • residential zone for the faculty and staff
  • students’ hostel zone
 
Other facilities on the campus includes a guest house, a community centre, a dispensary, shopping centre, banks, post office, sports complex, gymnasium, playgrounds, open air theatre, central seminar hall and night canteen etc.
 
There are seven male hostels, two female hostels, and an extra-large hostel that have a facility to accommodate around 2,000 male and 300 female students respectively.
 
Festivals / College Events :
 
1) TechNITi : A techno-management festival that is organized during the odd semester in mid-September. Participants from all over the nation come together for this three-day mega event.
 
2) Utkansh : A cultural festival that is organized during the even semester, which represents the creative side of the techies on campus. The event is typically a four-day affair that occurs during the end of March.
 
Campus Placements :
The institute is regularly visited by Indian and foreign MNCs for offering jobs to final-year B.Tech and M.Tech students. Many of these final year students get multiple job offers.
