Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh was established in 1986. REC Harmipur was a joint enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.
History :
On 26 June 2002 REC Hamirpur was granted the status of deemed to be university and upgraded into an NIT. The National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur is a public engineering college, one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology established, administered and funded by Government of India.
It has been awarded the status of institute of national importance by an Act of Parliament.

It was judged as the best NIT in terms of infrastructure by the World Bank.
Location :
The Institute is located on Hamirpur – Toni Devi - Awaha Devi Road in the outskirts of Hamirpur town.
The nearest airport is at Dharamshala (Gaggal, district Kangra) which is about 75 Kms from Hamirpur.
The campus is situated at Anu in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh and is 4 Kms from main bus stand of Hamirpur on Hamirpur – Toni Devi road. The city of Hamirpur is well connected with the rest of the country by road. The nearest broad gauge rail head is at Una (Himachal Pradesh) which is 80 Kms from Hamirpur.
NIT Hamirpur is around 4 kilometers away from Hamirpur bus stand.
Admissions :
50% of the students are from the state of Himachal Pradesh, whereas the other 50% are from the other States.
It conducts undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Engineering and Architecture and Doctor of Philosophy program in Engineering, Pure Science and Humanities.

GLUG NITH: It is GNU / Linux User Group of NIT Hamirpur. It organizes workshops, demonstrations and presentations. GLUG NITH hosts a file transfer protocol mirror server of gnu and popular Linux distributions.
College Campus :
The institute campus is spread over 250 acres and situated in the Hamirpur district at an altitude of 900 meter above sea level. The campus has a picturesque surrounding facing snow clad Dhauladhar mountain ranges. Lush green pine trees surround it. The campus is well laid with roads, electric installations, water supply, underground drainage, etc.
Being a residential institute, there are seven boys' hostels and one girls' hostels, with residences for the faculty and staff. NIT Hamirpur provides sports facilities for indoor and outdoor games. Sports facilities include cricket, football, lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton and athletics.

Library :
The institute library was set up in 1986 in one room of Government Polytechnic Hamirpur and was relocated to the institute campus in 1988 in Visvesvarya Block. Currently it is in a separate building with the floor area of 3200 square meters. The library can accommodate 500 people in reading halls and 100 readers in the audio-visual hall.
Festivals / College Events :
Hill 'Ffair and Nimbus are the cultural and technical festivals of NIT Hamirpurrespectively. During the days of Hill 'Ffair the open air theater becomes the center of operations for all the activities. The rock show, fashion parade, and the Mr. and Miss Hill 'Ffair competitions are some of the most admired events.
