Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College was established on 26 June 1961 as a joint venture of the Central government and the government of Uttar Pradesh. The foundation stone of the institute was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru. Effective from June 26, 2002, the college became a Deemed University and renamed as Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology.
History :
Motilal Nehru National Institute Of Technology, previously Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (MNREC), is a public higher education institute positioned in Allahabad.It is one of the National Institutes of Technology, and like the rest of them, classified as an Institute of National Importance.
The main building of the college was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on April 18, 1965. It was awarded the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) bringing it at the same level with IITs, IISc and ISI on 15 August 2007.
College Grade / Ranking :
- The institute was the pioneer in the country to put forward an undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering.
- MNNIT was ranked 10 in the Outlook India Top Engineering Colleges of 2012.
- The college was ranked 16 by Dataquest's India's Top Engineering Colleges 2011. (DQ-CMR Top T-Schools Survey 2011).
- In CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey 2011 it was ranked 6.
- Amongst the government engineering colleges it was ranked 18 on Mint's Top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009.

The institute offers 9 undergraduate B.Tech programs each of the four year duration.
The admission to this college is through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) score.
MNNIT offers 19 post-graduate programs of two year duration leading to M.Tech. degree.

College Campus :
The MNNIT site spreads over 222 acres on the bank of the river Ganga.
Other buildings on the campus include Computer Center, Central Library, CAD lab, Geo Lab, Concrete Lab, Heat Engine lab, Electrical Machines lab, Virtual Instrumentation lab, Mechanical Workshop, multipurpose hall, conference and seminar hall. The lecture halls and the tutorial classes of the institution are fully air conditioned.
It is among the few technical institutions in India to house two supercomputers, PARAM 8000 and PARAM 10000.
The Institute campus has excellent eating outlets, that serves food and cafeteria items at reasonable prices. An outlet managed by :

MNNIT is a fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys and one for girls. One hostel is exclusively for postgraduate students.

MNNIT hosts several annual events and festivals :
1) Culrav:
Culrav the cultural festival of MNNIT is a 3 days long annual festival renowned at national level in springs (in Feb or march). It is one of the biggest inter college cultural festival of North India. Previous performers in Culrav include Shruti Pathak, Bandish band and Euphoria.
2) Avishkar:
Student's Activity Centre of NIT, Allahabad organizes Avishkar, an Annual techno-management college fest .
- Gnosiomania : Annual national level quiz festival.
- Josh and Dr. J. Lal Memorial tournament : Annual inter college sports event.
- Swagat : fresher’s party for the first year students
- Ruksat : farewell party for final year students
- Virasat : a cultural event organized by Spic Macay
Campus Placements :
During academic session 2011–12, a student was offered Rs. 1.34 crore by Facebook, the highest for any technical student in India during that session and the second highest package in India overall, after Rs. 1.7 crore to the IIT Madras student during the same session.
