IIT Bombay is the second IIT to be established, was founded in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai. IIT Bombay has grown from strength to strength to come out as one of the top technical universities in the world.  It was set up with foreign assistance from UNESCO and Russia.
 
History :
 
Despite a change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the IIT retains the original name, IIT Bombay. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a group of autonomous public engineering institutes of higher education.
 
It is recognized worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research.  Since Inception, around 40,000 plus engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute.  It is noted for its strong research groups in diverse areas of science and technology that are making substantial contributions to national and International projects.

Admissions :
 
  • Admission to undergraduate B.Tech and integrated M.Tech programs are through IIT-JEE.
  • Admission to most postgraduate courses in IITs is given through various written entrance examinations.
  • The admission for PhD program is based mainly on a personal interview, though candidates may also have to appear for written tests.
Undergraduate Admissions – Bachelor of Technology ( B.Tech. ) :
 
IITadmits students for undergraduate programs based on their scores in the All India Rank     ( AIR ) inIIT-JEE ( Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Examination).
 
The B.Tech course is a 4-year program with eight semesters.
 
The Dual Degree and Integrated courses are 5-year programs with ten semesters. This program is the Bachelor and Master degree combined together.
 
Postgraduate Admissions – Master of Technology ( M.Tech. ), Master of Science ( M.Sc. ) & Master of Business Administration ( MBA ).:
 
Admissions for postgraduate programs are through GATE ( Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ) or sponsorship.
 
Doctor of Philosophy degree ( PhD ) :
 
The IITs also offer the Doctor of Philosophy degree ( PhD ) as part of their doctoral education program. The IITs, along with NITs and IISc, account for nearly 80% of all PhDs in engineering.

The Student Alumni Relations Cell, managed by the students of IIT-B, works towards improvement of interactions between students and former studentsof IIT Bombay. SARC has launched many initiatives like the Alumni Student Mentorship Program, Students Alumni Meet (SAM), Phonathon etc.
 
College Campus :
 
IIT Bombay is a small township in itself. Nearly all facilities are available on campus itself including a bank, a shopping centre, an atm, post office, and a well equipped hospital. All students and most faculties live on campus, in student hostels and IIT staff quarters.
 
The institute has two swimming pools, football, hockey, cricket grounds and lawntennis, basketball, squash and volleyball courts. In addition the hostels also have their own sports grounds.
 
Students' Activity Center (SAC) organizes various intellectual and extracurricular activities.

Library :
 
The Central Library occupies a place of pride in IIT Bombay and is an important factor of the institute's excellent research and education mission. Central Library is housed in a self-sufficient, five-storied building with a carpet area of over 63,000 sq.ft. and is situated towards North of Main building.
 
The library has collection of prescribed books, sections for fiction and other literary genres. The electronic libraries permit students to access on-line journals and periodicals.
 
Festivals / College Events :
 
All IITs organize annual technical festivals, usually lasting three or four days.
 
Techfest is the annual science and technology festival of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
 
Techfest is a grand three day festival event in the month of January within the campus of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay which attracts footfall of over 92000 from all over India and even abroad, including students, alumni, academia, corporates and the general public.
 
Started in 1998, it is among the very few student organizations to have received investment from UNESCO .Techfest is the most popular and major technical event in Asia in terms of participants and prize money involved.
 
Mood Indigo (Mood-I / MI )  is the most trendy and the largest college cultural fest of the Indian Institute of Technology BombayinAsia.
 
Started in 1971, it is a four-day long event held towards the end of December every year. It draws a footfall of more than 80,000 students from across the country.
 
Performing Arts Festival (PAF) is the biggest inter-hostel cultural competition iniit-b. Each PAF includes drama, literature, music, fine arts, debating, and dance. All PAFs are held in the Open Air Theater (OAT), inside the Students' Activity Center (SAC), within the main campus of IIT Bombay.
 
Campus Placements :
 
IIT Bombay is the most preferred academic institute to a large number of organizations for recruiting excellent employees with immense potential as future leaders.
 
In the final year of their studies, most of the students are placed into industries and organizations via the placement process of the respective IIT. Some students avoid this either when going for higher studies or when they start jobs by applying to the companies directly.
