Mechanical Engineering (MECH)

Mechanical engineeringis one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines.

This highly popular branch of engineering is concerned with the design, production, installation, maintenance, construction, and operation of power plants, engines, and machines.

It deals mostly with things that move. Mechanical engineering overlaps with aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and petroleum engineering to varying amounts.

It is one of the primitive branches of Engineering which have remained forever in demand and it will continue to be in the future. This is why Mechanical trade is called as an Evergreen trade (branch), there will always be opportunities here, despite varying market trends.

As the Industrial sector has considerably risen in pace, the need for more mechanical engineers has increased exponentially. Every manufacturing and production industry needs mechanical engineers to carry out jobs efficiently for their companies.

Mechanical engineers work in the automotive, nanotechnology, aerospace, chemical, computer, communication, paper, and power generation industries.

Mechanical engineers will be found in virtually any manufacturing industry. Every product or service in modern life has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer. Within this stream there can be further specializations like thermal engineering, design, and production engineering, etc.

What will you learn?

As a mechanical engineer, you will determine the direction of your career. Pathways are far-reaching and include -

  • Working with computer software to design and develop new machinery
  • Studying auto aerodynamics using powerful supercomputers
  • Inventing an ultrasonic device that deters whales, dolphins, and seals from swimming into fishing nets
  • Designing a rocket engine to withstand the subzero temperatures of outer space
  • Developing a microprobe small enough to dissect a single nerve cell under a microscope
  • Analyzing machinery such as gas turbines, control devices, and jet engines, with the goal of improving performance
  • Designing prostheses or biomedical devices

What is there to study?

Mechanical Engineers have to study a whole lot of physics, Engineering drawing, machine drawing and many more concepts such as -

  • Statics
  • Dynamics
  • Mechatronics
  • Kinetics
  • Kinematics
  • Strength of Materials - SOM
  • Materials Science
  • Theory of Machines - TOM
  • Thermodynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics - FM
  • Heat Transfer
  • Manufacturing
